My rendition of the grade 1 exam piece in the latest ABRSM syllabus, What Was I Made For. I rarely cover grade one pieces but I'm doing so as this happens to be Aurelia's favourite song. She calls this her "meow meow sad song" πŸ˜†She is happy that this song is included as one of the exam pieces, but she will not be learning this version as she thinks that grade 1 is too easy for her πŸ˜‚ πŸŽ‰ Congratulations to Jiahow on achieving a Distinction in the ABRSM Grade 2 Performance Exam! He is also the first student to record at my new place. 🎹 Summer Scales & Arpeggios Challenge 2026 🌞 β€œDo I really need to practise scales?” If I had a dollar for every time a student asked this, I’d probably have enough to buy another piano. Scales are often seen as the β€œboring” part of piano lessons β€” repetitive, mechanical, and nowhere near as exciting as playing favourite pieces. But skipping scales is a little like trying to become a good athlete without basic conditioning. Here are the reasons why. 🎹 From Frustration to Freedom: My Scale Journey When I first began learning violin at six years old, my mum often nagged at me to 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘒𝘡 𝘡𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘀𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘩π˜ͺ𝘭𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘒𝘺π˜ͺ𝘯𝘨. At that age, I was too young to understand her intentions, and the advice felt more like a distraction than a help. πŸŽ‰ Congratulations on a Distinction! 🎢 Almost every piano student dreams of playing fast. Some milestones deserve extra recognitionβ€”and this is definitely one of them.
